It's also hard to see real improvement or know the right interventions for a given student. Private psychologists, tutors, speech and language therapists, etc., all have lengthy waitlists and come with a high price tag. Unfortunately, the common classroom is not always built to champion neurodiverse students, and it is incredibly difficult to get answers and solutions outside of the school. Heldfond described that no two students think and learn the same way, but they should still achieve the same success at the end of the day. "All the while, I didn't understand how or why I was 'different' until much later in life." "With age, I became more aware of my strengths and weaknesses and learned to advocate for myself to make things easier," Heldfond states. Heldfond wanted to practice soccer with her friends, not working with a tutor after school. As a result, she did not understand why she needed to spend all of this extra time learning, studying, and preparing, which was incredibly frustrating. Despite being re-tested every three years, no psychologist ever sat her down and explained what these medical diagnoses meant. Heldfond explained that Dyslexia and ADHD are scary-sounding words that have no meaning to a seven-year-old.
